On the morning of Decembev 2, 1896, the home of Mr Thos. Tanner, Eiverslea, was destroyed by fire. Tho Hastings Standard of that date described the home as one of the most beautiful in New Zealand. "Tlie origin of tho firo is unknown," continues the Standard 's repcVt, "and tho houso was enveloped in flanies before the inmates were aware of the calamity. Mr Tannor and Miss Tanner had a narrow escapo with their lives by getting out of the building through ono of the windows.
