Record of Its Initial Meeting FIRST OFFICE-HOLDERS The Hastings Town District Board, predeeessor of the Hastings Borough Couneil, held its first meeting on February 4, 1884. The minutes form an interesting connection with the names of men who have been mentioned elsewhere in this issue for their work in the pioneering of the towu. There were present at the meeting Captain Russell, Messrs T. Tanner, C.- Doney, T. Foreman and ,F. D. Luclde. The proceedings are thus recorded in the
minutes: — Moved by Mr Tanner, scconded by Mr Foreman: That Captain Russell be appointed chairman of the board. — Carried. A letter was read from Mr J. Collinge making application for the appointment of elerk, valuer and rate collector to the board. Moved by Mr Tanner, seconded by Mr Foreman: That Mr Collinge be appointed elerk, valuer, and rate and dog-tax colleetor to the board at a salary of £40 per annum.. — Carried. Mr Collinge waited upon the board and accepted their offer and also offered the free use of his office for carrying on the work of the board. It was resolved that the chaiiman be authorised to arrange with Mr Kfcunedy for the completion of a map of the Hastings town district. Moved by Mr Tanner, seconded by Mr Doney: That the elerk be instructed to prepare a valuation for the district and also to make a revaluation of the properties divided by the town district boundary for the purpose of enablihg the board to arrange with thc Heretaunga Road Board as to the value of such portions of the abovenamed properties as Tie within their respeetive districts. — Carried. Moved by Mr Doney, seconded by Mr Foreman: That the registration fee for dogs within the town district be five shillings for each dog and that the elerk be instrueted to arrange with Mr Bethel for the supply of dog-collars for the board. Price not to exceed one sliilling each.— Carried. Moved by Mr Foreman, seconded by Mr Tanner: That Mr Luckie be appointed treasurer to the board.— Carried. It was deci'ded that the time for holding the next meeting of the board be left to the discretion of the ehair.man. Tlicre being no other business brought forward, the meeting adjourned.
