INCREASE IN DWELLINGS The following statistics regarding the borough of Hastings for the year just end'ed may be of interest: — Borough eonstituted a Town Board in 1884. Incorporated a borough, 1886. Area, 2612 acres. Population (census 1936).— Borough, 12,754;" urban, 5,205; total, 17.959 (increase 25.6 per cent.). Number of rateable properties, 3641. . Number of ratepayers, 2914. Unimproved value of borough. £1,380.524. Value of improvements, £2,451,720. Capital value, £3,832,244. Consolidated rate on unimproved falue, 7d in the £. whieh is made up as follows: — ^Borough 5.86, Hospital Board .99, Rivers Board .15. No rate was struck for the rubbisli colleetion, as this service was borne by the general account; nevertheless, it is just as well to mention' that so far as is known, othep munieipalities levy a special sanitation fee or rate for this privilege, , so that df the cost of this service is taken into eonsideratiou the net increase in the amount of borough rates levied was very small. The water rate, on unimprovel value, is: Full, one and one-fifth; half, threefifths. Publie debt (net), £316,481 18/8. ■ Value of sinking funds, £29,104 1 /8. ' Total rate yield, £42,374 19/4. Percentage of rate colleetion, 96.28. Loau interest paid during year, £13,776 13/-. Sinking-fund payments and principal repaid, £19,131 7/11. Number of buildiug permits issued during past year, 256. Value of permits, £132,026. Streets. — Total miles of streets, excluding boundary roads, 45.3; miles of bitumenised streets, 27; miles of macadam roads, 18.3. Eootpaths. — Total miles of footpaths, 90; miles "of surfaeed paths, conerete 42.9, asphalt 23.9, total, 66.8; miles not surfaeed, 23.2. Dwellings. — The number of dwellings in the borough at March 31, 1922, was 2212. , Increase to March 31: 1923, 75; total, 2287. 1924, 71; total, 2358.
