PORANGAHAU INSTITUTE HOLDS NINTH BIRTHDAY

The Porangahau Women's Institute celebrated its ninth birthday on Thursday in the Masonic supper room. There was a large attendance of both members and visitors, Wallingford, Mangaorapa and Waverley Institutes bein'g represented- The afternoon .was spent in games and competitions- Mrs Nelmes and Mrs Hobson and Miss E. Somerville were declared the winners. Mrs F. Scia Scia gave a Maori song and Mrs Hobson a pianoforte solo. A short playette, "Mechanical Jane" was given by Miss K. Greep, Miss White "and Mrs Ward. Afternoon tea was served by the committee. Mrs Hobson, the retiriug president, cut the birthday cake, made by Mrs R. Ropiha and iced and decorated by Mrs Healey. Instead of the usual eandles, wire cupies were used in the decorations, each one representing the president for each year.
