There was a large attendance from all parts of the district, including a number of territorial and other officers of the Wellington East Coast Mounted Eifies ti; present in camp at Dannevirke, at the Norsewood branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association's 21st anniversary dance. Considerable time had been devoted to planning and preparing very appropriate decoiatioqg, the work of Mrs Adamson, Mr K. Staiger and their l.and of willing helpers. The dance programme was under the control of Mr F. Iiishop. Mr W. Te Tau's light orcLesfra added to the pleasure oi tlio | evening, providing splendid music, and j eijjoyable extras were contributed by ! Mrs C. Parsons, and Mr K. Staiger and ; Miss Coady (violin). A Monte Carlo and a spot waltz created much interest. The former was won by Mra R. Arm- i strc'ng and Mr F. Bailey, and the latter j by Miss R. Mortensen and Mr Edwards. j The president of the branch, Mr. Te . Tan, read .to the gathering an addressj of appreciation from the ex-servicemen j of Norsewood and district on the occasion of the associatin's 21st birthday. He extended to all their deep sense oi' gratitude to the people who had so loyally 'supported the R.S.A. for the past two decades in its endeavour to im> j piave the lot of incapacitated soldiers. He also paid a tribute to the diligence of those willipg workers who had assist« ed so materially to make the present function such a signal success.
At this stage Mr Te Tau enumerated the many inestimable qualities of Miss Joyee Bishop, daughter of the immediate past-president, Mr F. Bishop, and after emphasising her sterling worth in the R.S.A. interests stated that the association had decided to show their ap* Xreciation in some tangible form, On their behalf Mr Te Tau presented Miss Bishop with a handsome bedroom clock, suitably inscribed. Miss Bishop was loudly applauded on tstepping on to thq stage, and .briefly returned thanks. Finally the occasion was fittingly honoured by the production of a magniflcent cake. surmounted by 21 candles, made and donated by Mrs F. Bishop. This kindly action was fully appreeiated by the ex-servicemen, especially as Mrs j Bndiop had kept it as a surprise for them. The oldest soldier, ex-Gunner G. F. Bardill, was called upon to light the candles, whieh • were subsequently extkiguished by a mighty gust of wind from Mr Hans Nielsen, the oldest citizon present. Dancing was then continued till a dauity and plentiful supper made its uppe&rance, being served by many willing helpers. About 2 a.m. the proeeeuings concluded.
