GOLDEN WEDDING

Mr. and Mrs. G- Mayo Tho golden anniversary of the marI'iage of Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Mayo, of Brightwater terrace, Palmerston North, was celebrated on Saturday last, when a family re-union was held. Mr. and MrS. Mayo were married in 1887 at Wairoa, and they received many mes«ages of congratulation on this occasion, little Anne, a grand-daughter, presenting Mrs. Mayo with a houquet. There was a handsome two-tiered .;ake, which had been made by Mrs. Biehard Mayo, and the toast to "the bride and bridegroom" was proposed by the eldest son. Both Mr. and Mrs. Mayo 's families saw stirring times in the Maori Wars. Mr. Mayo was born at Bayswater, Richmond, Surrey, and came to New Zealand at the age of five. Mrs. Mayo Was born in the DominiOn. Their families lived in the Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay( distfietS, and the heads of the two fanjili.es saw service in the Maori wars. On one occasion, while her hnsband was on service, Mrs. Mayo, senr., was persuaded by friendly Maoris to join them in their flight -by canoe to "Wairoa to oscape an attacking tribe. That the warning was timely Was Cvident in that their home was burned. For 33 years out of a i'esidenco of 39 years in Palmerston North, Mr. and Mrs. Mayo have made their home in Brightwater Terrace. They have brohght up a family of 10 children, the sous being Messrs Herbert (Stratford), Edward (Stratford), Riehard (Palmerston North), Percy (Stratford), Victor (Dunedin) and William (Palmerston North). The> daughters are Mesdames A, F. B, (Alice) Shailer (Bulls) and P. (Mary) Morgan (Palmerston North). Mr. Mayo has five brothers Still living and Mrs. Mayo two brothers aud seven sisters.
