In th© Davis Cup doubles, Stedman and Malfroy (New Zealand) defeated Khosinkie and Tsuiwaxpui (China), 6—3, 6—8, 6—3, 6-2. Kie's brillianc© did not compensate for th© weakness of his partner, who was outclassed, despite a vigorotis serviee enabling him to score an occasional ace. The New Zealanders continued to pound th© weaker opponent. The Chinese fought strongly in the second set and drew level at 5 — 5 after Being down 3 — 5. New Zealand won the next game, but lost the next two owing to Malfroy beooming erratip. The dhinese volleying clinched the set. The New Zealanders rallied in the third and brok© throughj Pui's serviee for the lead, which was steadily increased. They continued to force the pace, catching their cpponents out of position. Malfroy' s smashes were conspicuous.
