TREE TIMES ROUND THE WORLD
The remarkable marathon performances of Hubert Opperman and Ossie Nicholson seem likely to earn for Australians a reputation as cycling "mile-eaters." The nuggety Nicholson gained the world's record for a month's cycling by covering 4841.7 miles at an average of 156.16 a day during March, Meanwhile "Oppy" has been preparing for the Coronation six-day cycle race at Wembley, which will carry prize money of between £8000 and £10,000. It is estimated that during the next three months "Oppy" will cover over 10,000 miles, most of it in preparation for the six day race and the 1937 Tour de France, in which he is to captain the British Empire team. Opperman's 1937 programme also includes an attack on the Perth to Sydney record— a journey of 3017 miles, which he hopes to make in October. Nicholson, In his effof t to regain the record for a year's cycling, is aiming to cover 50,000 miles by December 31. Therefore between them Nicholson and Opperman will probably travel a distance equal to three times round the world before the end of the year.
