Payment for Anzac Day
(By Telegraph-
AUCKLAND, Last Night. The female employees of B. Greer and Son, Ltd., clothing manufacturers, of Auckland, who work under one of the awards in the clothing industry iwhich presoribes that when Anzac Day jfalls on a Sunday a holiday will be iobserved on the Mon'day following, 'have intimated that unless holiday rates of pay are paid in respect of work t,hey performed on Monday they will cease work until such payment is made. In common with. other Auckland clothing manufacturers, B. Greer and Son, Ltd., did not close its factory on Monday, apparently holding the opinion shared by most of the employers affected by the awards that the Court of Arbitration had no power to fix the observance of Anzac Day on any other day than that preseribed by the Anzac Day Act and its amendment, whieh fixes April 25. Friday is pay day • throughout the industry so that not until then can it be definitely said that the employers will not pay holiday rat.es for the work petfonned on Monday last. Although it was authoritativeJly stated last week that many employers proposed to pay the ratos preseribed for the ordinary working day and to face prosecution by the Labour Department for a breach of the award, nego- i tiations are now proceeding, it is ascer- I tained, in respect of the ultimatuni ! given by the employees of E. Greer and Son, Ltd., and unless these are suecessful that aspect of. the workers' trouble will come to a head when .the wages are paid on Friday.
