TIPPING SYSTEM

Position on Mail Steamers (Eeceived 29, 8.45 a.m.) MELBOURNE, April 28. Sidelights on the tipping system on overseas mail-boats were given in the (Jounty Court by a shipping clerk during the hearing of an action in whieh Anthony Darvall, employed by tho Orient Steamship Company, gave evidence that the tips usually given by passenges to England were:— Five pounds to the table waiter, £1 10/- to £2 to the head waiter, £1 to £1 5/- to the wine steward, £5 to the bedroom steward, £1 to* the bathroom steward, £1 to £1 5/- to each of the £our lounge stewards, £2 to deck stewards, who were indirectly tipped from the sports fees.
