Going Was Very Heavy Yesterday WOODVILLE CANDIDATES The conditions wero most unpleasant for track work at Awapuni yesterday morning, for the weather was cold and showery. Some or | the horses with engagements at tne Dannevirke meeting, which is oeing held at Woodville at the end of tne week, were required to gallop tiuring heavy rain and the course oecame more holding as the -morning advanced. The course proper, witn the flags ahout 15 feet out. was open i'or fast work, and the going was heavy. Aria, the Hunting Song — Paonui iilly who is accepted for the Maiden Stakes on Friday, with S. Anderson up, from a barrier start, sprinted two furlongs in |J5 1-5, moving well after giving a bit pf trouble behind the tapes. Dawning Light was xestricted to light exercise. Cloudy Bay (Anderson) sprinted half a mile in 52 2-5 after being cloeked to pia the first furlong in 14 1-5. Stargono (D. Mansfield) and Tidewaiter (G. Tattersall) were companions pver five furlongs. The fcrmer got the better of the start, but Tidewaiter gradually elosed the gap and was doing Detter than Stargouo at the finish. The last half* inile took threm 53 and Tidewaiter 's effort was quite an attractive cne. Riotous (W. J. McDowell) jumped the brush fences and then did even time over six furlongs on the course proper. , Riotous looks well. j Martara's three-quarter brother was sprinted down the straight, moving particularly well. He is a bold galloper. [ The Grooner, after a fast first furlong, completed a four-furlong flutter in 54. Taumau (P. Rae) and Petrarch (Anderson) were galloped a mile and they were together for most of- the way. Their sectiouai times werei First threq 42 1-5] half a mile, 55 2-5; five, 1.9 3-^ and the full distance, with Taumau haif a length to the good at the post, took , 1.52. Forest. Glow, With a light boy up, ana j looking bright and keen to work, was \ galloped a miie and a quarter. The pace waa not on over the first bit, but | the steeplechaser was moving smoothiy .to cut the. last five furlongs out in 1.10 3-5. Manawatu (A. McDonald) was given easy exercise and then a pipe-opener on the course proper. He appeare to be in great order, and he should not take long to reach top form. Flammarion, with N. Voitre up, was restrieted to strong pace work, and he did his' best to pull his rider out of the saddle. To ride Flammarion during pace work is a full-sized job for anyone. Gay Boy (Anderson) was never at top in a six-furlong flutter which took him 1.25. Gay Boy is looki»g a picture at present. Esteem (B. Brown) and Pango, (Mans- , field) sprinted five furlongs in 1.8 4-5, ' and it was a nice effort. They finished 'together. .jOorroboree (G. Tattersall), who has 9.1 in the Oringi Handicap on Friday, iwas galloped a mile, and Ohat joined in > at the seven. They were together with i three furlongs to go, the first five having taken 1.7 3-5, and Chat then drew ahead to lead into the straight. .Corroboree, however, was bowling along ; smoothiy and.in the run to the post he ran up to Chat and was a length to the good at the finish. The time for the full distance was. 1.50 3-5, and Corroboree did his work very nicely. The Sky Blne — Markful maiden, which haB been .named Skyfall, with Mansfield up, sprinted half a mile with Lactose (J. Rae) and the former had the better of it at the finish after taking 55 secs. Heavy rain, was falling at this stage, and the going was getting slower. Lady Ina (C. W. France) was worked over five furlongs on the course proper, and she was going into it a bit, though plugging along resolutely at the finish ,to complete in 1.10 2-5. The last gallop was Catalogue (R. 1 Chisholm) and he had the worst track. His task was* a miie, which he covered in 1.51 1-2, and his last five took 1.10 2-5. He worked well throughout, and in the Dannevirke Handicap on Friday he will be ridden by Chisholm.
