Captain Samuel Jones Passes

WAIROA, Last Night. Captain Samuel Jones, second son of the late David and Agnes Jones, of Wairoa, has died at Auckland, after a short illness, in his 6Uth. year. He was a married man and leaves fiesides his widow, a large grown-up family. Born at tbe Heads, Wairoa, the son of a weli-known Wairoa pilot of the early days, Captain Jones became acquainted early with the sea, and on many occasions assisted his father in his duties at the bar. He was the repositovv of rnuch Maori traditiou and tribal lore, his grandtather being Te Waka Haeo, a lcading chief, who took a conspicuous part jn the defenre of Rangihoua ailu Apipaniki pas at thc Heads iii a raid by 'Ngati-tau Whaietoa. Captain Jones rau the Hi'.ljardSon Co's coastal buats for a number of years to Wairoa and up the coast. His longesL service was as> skipper of ihe Pukeko- He retired about 18 months ago on superannuation.
