WAIPUKURAU CHESS CLUB

Our Own Correspondent. \

Good Progress Made Last Season

(From

WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. The annual meetlng of the Waipukurau Chess Club was held in the Fire Brigade room, Mr. G. E. Fojvler presiding. Once again the passing. of time has brought the chess season round again, and it is indeed pleasing to see so many of our old members witb us, and to welcome frcsh faces," said Mi. G. E. Fowler, president of the club, in presenting his annual report. "Tho 1936 season was a fairly quiet one as far as we were concerned. The championship of the club was annexed by Mr. R. W. White, a comparatively young player, but one who has the right temperament for chess. Tlie runnei-up was Mr. G. Wiggins, who displayed fine form during tlie season. Due to a combination of circumstances our club did not play the usual games with Hastings or Napier last year, but I trust that this season we sliall again have the pleasure of having home and home matches with botli the nortliern clubs. It is pleasing to know that the Ruahine Club at Makaretu is flourisliing. We have several good games with this club last year. Out of the five outside games played during the season only one was lost, while three were won and one drawn. Waipawa last year formed a good club and met our team. We hope this year to have games with YVaipawa frequently. Possibly a combination of the three clubs in Central H&wke's Bay might well be considered when we meet outside clubs. The club came througli the season successfully financially. This season it sliould be our aim to teach more young players the game. I desire to express my sincere thanks to the captain, Mr. I). W. Neild, for his great cooperation during the yeai», to the secretary, Mr. R. W. \Unte, who did such yeomau service, and to the committee j which worked in such accord at all times. Officers Eiected. The following officers were eiected : President, Mr. G. E. Fowler; club captain, Mr. D. W. Neild; secretary, Mr, J. Huntlcy Walker; committee. Messrs. G. Wiggins, G. Stapleton and R. Holms. It was decided to hold the games on Thursdiy niglits this year, the opening night to be held on April 29, when members from the Waipawa and Ruahine Chess Clubs would be invited to attend. After some discussion a resolution tliat Jraughts and chess should be played by tbe club if suffieient players were forthcoming, was carried. Yotes of tlianks for donations were passed to Messrs. J. HuntJey Walker and R. W. Carpenter. llcgrct was expressed that Mr. R, W. White, who is going to Hastings, liad to resign his post as secretary. The annual subscription was tixed on tlie same basis as last year.
