(By
CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. An xncrease of one pemiy per gallon in the price of petrol in areas where price flxation schemes are operative was announced by the Minister of tndustries and Commerce, Hon. D. G. Sullivan, to-day. The increase has .been made at the request of the wholesalers and will apply to North Canterbury, Wellington -and" Manawatu, the new price bringing these areas into line with those where there is no flxation. A Gazette notice anxxouncing the new price was issued to-night and the higher prices will become operative from the date of issue. "I wish it to be understood," said Mr. ^ Sullivan, ' ' that this increase was justifiable after a f ull and caref ul inquiry has been made into all the circumstances,. The increase is necessitated by circumstances entirely beyond the control of the Government, as it has been found upon investigation that overseas prices of petrol had shown.a steady increase during the last several months- and that tanker freight rates had shown a marked advance. The increase Fs' inno way attributable .to the conditioUs within the Dominion." Eegulations issued to-nlght as a supplernent to the Gazette provide that the price at whieh the re.taxler in Wcl--lington may sell inOtor spirits shall be ls lld per imperial gallon for standard grade motor spirits, and 2s per imperial gallon for premium grade motor spirits. The wholesale price is fixed at ls 8d for standard grade motor spirit and ls 9d for premiu'm grade.
