In preparation for the Dannevirke meeting this week-end and the forthcor^iing H.B.J.C. Jubilee Cup meeting, Hastings trained horses were on Saturday morning given more fg,st work thau they have received since before Eaeter. Where not specdfied the gallops took pla-ce on the plough. * * * The first to get going were Kalika (B. Stowe) and Winitangi (K. Brueur) , who on the inside grass track registered 52 fof the half -mile, finishing abxeast. # * * Agog (B. StoWe), who is to fulfil his hack engagements at the Dannevirke meeting, was sent six furlongs at a working gallop pace, registering 1.21. On the grass Quake (E. Deslandes) and Mon Aee (H. Murray) -were assoeiated in a half-mile flutter for the latter, who was receiving at loast a eouple of stone, to finish ahead by a ! eouple of lengths in 51£. Mon Ace appears to have improved of late and to be ono lihely to piek up a race ere I the season ends. * # • On the same track Feliedtation (B. j Stowe) was not bustling herself 'to ruri | Iralf a mile in 54. This little filly is ' not a good track worker, doing better in public than in her rehearsals. # « • Marsyas (H. Murray) did a shade better than 1.20 for three-quarters of a i mile. Tiger Gain (A. Griffiths) and I Ambuis (C. Sheath) were by no means oxtended in their five-furlong gallop. The latter will in all probability have his first public outing ou Friday at 1 Woodville. He ds a promising maiden and will disappoint if not out of this class very shortly. j * • * I Trailer (R. MarsTi), who also goes to i Woodville, was given a working try-, ; out over seven furlongs to run 1.33. i Blaek Frost, who is being hacked about ; by his owuer, Mr D. N. Lane, was in , and ran along a few fcrlongs against ihe bit. The big gelding appears to itave made a full recovery. * * * Padishah (B. Stowe) went once .ound in 1.42, being asslsted by Laequer (J. Forsyth) over the first five i xurlongs, which occupied 65secs. * • • i Royal Banquet (C. Pilier) and Mohua j (H. Callinan) were given- a working i gallop together, cloeking 1.20. Royal Banquet was jumped the other morning and pleased. * # • Lindrum (B. Stowe), on the grass track, had Gironde (C. Stratton) doing his very best over three fuflongs" in 37. The two-year-old was clear of his stablemate at the finish. * » • • Tycoon (H. Young), also on the grass, went pleasingly over threequarters of a mile in the very .fair time of 1.17$. Yocng will ride/the big gelding at Woo'dville. * * • Blygain (R. Marsh)., who arrived xnid-week from Gisborne for the Hawke ;s Bay meeting, ran half a mile comfortably in 52. She is accompanied on the trip by a yearling full-brother to Black Frost. This baby resembles Slippery most notieeably. « # • Dusky Crown (E. Deslandes) had the better of Pikete (D. Colell,o) over six furlongs run in 1.21f. Mona Lisa (H. Murray) and the steeplechaser Wykemist (J. McNaughton) were abreast at the end of four in 52. # * • Asset (P. Atkins) was well clear of Mary Rose (R. Mareh) over half a mile run in 51$, while the half-sister to Antique had the better of Seyfried (J. .Forsyth) in a three-furlong spnint in •38. # * • Gasman (J. Walsh) doing it comfortably, ran three in 89, and his stable companion (J. Walsh) was hard hel'd .when taking 42 for the same distance. * # • Passion Flower (C. Pilier) was going very easily when finishing alongside Grey Molly (H. Callinan) over a xound of the plough in 1.43. Passion Flower went most pleasingly, although tho time was slow. • » • By himself, Parry (H. Young) registered 1.18$ for six furlongs. He is to race at Woodville, as will his stablemate Iddo the second day dn the liurdles, « • • ; Pakanui (P. Atkins) ran his mile on the plough in 1.44, a very fair effort, but fhe broken-winded gelding appeared to be stopping a little at tho fmish, whieh was not surprising as iie ran the first half-mile in 48$. He was accompanied over the final six furlongs by Wananga (R. Marsh), who gave Pakanui a big start and a decisivo beating over that part of the journey. • ♦ # Big Dook was not galloped, but ho appeared to revel in his pace work. He has been here since the Manawata meeting, waiting for the H.B. Cup, a xace dn which he will in all probability carry No. 1 saddle-cloth. • * • Lavina (J. Walsh) was sprinted a few furlongs, but was not timed. She appears to be in the best of racing condition. Jazz Boy (P. Atkins) was the best part of a length ahead of Top Hat (H. Callinan), with Helios (C. Pilier) beaten off, in a five-furlong gallop m 64$. • * • Contact (J. Walsh) was given a working gallop. This gelding will Tace only in the hurdles at the Hawke's Bay meeting the second day. • * • Cotsfield (J. Walsh) was schooled over a round of the hurdles to give a fair display. He will race at Hastings next month Cn the hurdle events as a preliminary to the steeplechase season. * « • Peter Beckford (P. Atkins), wide out and doing his work well within himself. with Soho (J. Forsyth) as companion. registered 63$ for five — the best of the morning over this distance. Cletrac (R. Marsh) ran his half-mile alone in 52$. * » # Others to work without being galloped included Iddo, Journet, Red Bufus, King's Hope, Buster Brown, Pladie, Blue Garter, Hamarin, Tupai,
Sir Nigel, Royal Bengal (who had a go on his own on the inside plough track) and four oy five rising two-year-olds. • # • Harold Griffiths, who recentiy reliaquished the position of private trainer to Mr C. P. Haldane, has now commenced as a public trainer and, having already proved. his abdlity, should very soon have a full stable. He is at present in charge of the yearling full brother to Hunting Jay.
