BOWLERS' SMOKE CONCERT
o Waipawa Club Holds Enjoyable Evening WAIPAWA, This Day. As a wind-up for the 1937 season, the Waipawa Bowling Club beld a most successful smoke concert in the Oddfellows' Hall last evening, the president, Mr N. J. McKay, being in the chair and there being an attendance of some 40 members and visitors. Tbe guests of the evening were tbe members of tbe teams from the Waipawa Club whieh won the Champion Fours ((Messrs Critcliley, Adeane", Patterson, Eagjle) and Champion Pairs (Messrs Shackleford and Patterson). Representatives of tbe Waipukurau Bowiing Club were also in attendance. Mr- McKay extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, and said it gave the members great pleasur© to have an opportunity of doing honour to the teajns which had so successfully competed in the district competitions. The following toasts were honoured : — "The King;" champion fours, proposed by ]\Ir A. E. Jull and replied to by Mr F. Eagle and the individual members of tbe tearn ; champion pairs, proposed by Mr F. Holt, snr-, and respQnded to by Mr Patterson ; Kindred Clubs, proposed by Mr C. H- Critehley, and replied to by Mr Townsend (Waipukurau); juuior bowlers, proposed by Mr F. Adeane and replied to by Messrs E. Kingston and F. Holt, jun. Mr Townsend also took the opportunity of presenting t0 tbe Waipawa Club tbe Dillon Sbield which had been won by thera tbis season, extendiug to the club tho Reartiest. congratqlations of the Waipukurau Club on tbe win, and also tbe success athieved by tbe championship teams. .
A snort programme was presented, items being contributed by Mr J . Barker, vocal solos. Mr A. Venner, humorous numbers; Mr A. E. Jull, re--eitation ; Mr F. Adeane, humorous stories, The tropliies won • during the season were also presented as follow: — Senioi" championship, Mr C- H. Critehley ; junior championship, Mr W- J. Miller; champion pairs, Messrs Walker and Eagle; -Brewer Buttons, Messrs Bennett and Jopson;
Mr S. W. Strang referred to the ex"cellent work' which had been done during the season by the selector, Mr V. A. Patterson , and • by Mrs Patterson, particularly in regard to tbe organisation of functiong in eonnection witb the bathing belle carapaign, aod other elub actnities, aud asked Mr Patterson to acfept as a tokon of apprceiaticn ot the scrviies rendcred a bahdsome set oi' Vascs. He asked Mr Patterson to coiiVey to Mrs Patterson tho best wislies oi the members for n speedy reeovery froin the accident slm had recently suffered. Suitahle response was made by 3Ir' Patterson. Supper was served by Mesdames Adeane and Strang; Mrs Strang having also acted as aecompanist during the evening. A vgry plea^ant gathericg was brought to a close with the singing. of "Anld Lang Syne."
