"BOOM CONDITIONS"

Dr. Condliffe's Comment on New Zealand Dr J. B. Condliffe gav6 two lectures on "Economic Nationalism in an International World" at the London School of Economics on March 4 and 5. Lord Lothian, who presided at the first lecture, referred to Dr Condliffe's distinguished and varied career and expressed pleasure that he was coming to the School in September as Professor of Commerce, with special reference to international trade. A large audience, which included the Higli Commissioner for New Zealand, heard a lucid explanation by the lecturer of many aspects of current economic problems, illustrated in several cases by recent experiences in Australia and New Zealand. He reonarked incidentally that there was a definite case to be made out for the New Zealand Government's attempt to insulate farmers from effects of rapid variations in world prices. He said that New Zealand was now experiencing boom conditions, and that if free expenditure were indulged in until the last of the 35,000 unemployed secured work the result might be a depression sucb as that recently experienced.
