ANNUAL MEETING OF NAPIER RED CROSS SOCIETY
. The annual moeting of the Napier Red Gross sub-centre syes held last . evening in the Red Cross rortms. Garlyle street, Napier, Mr M. S. Spence presiding. Assoeiated with him on the platform were Mrs T. H. Lowry (Okawa), O.B.E., president of> the N.Z. Red .Cross Society, Miss E. M. King, M.B.E., vice-president Napier snbcentre, Mr Norman Grant, of the Wellington fexecutive N.Z. Red Cross, Mr A, E. Bedford, chairman of the Napier Committee, and Mr J. M. Runcimun (hon. seeretary), Mr Spence opened the meeting with a welcome to all' present and read several apologies including dne from the Hastings sub-centre which had a meeting oftheir pwn at. the same time but whlch sent congratulations to the Napier centre "on its excelle'nt work done last 'year. The election of officers rpsulted in the following being re-elected : — -President, Mr M. S. Spence; vice-president, MissE. M. Xing, M.H.E.; chairmaii, Mr A. E, Bedford; treasurer, Miss King; hon. seeretary, Mr J. M. ; Runciman; hon. auditor, Mr H. E. Edgeley. The committee were also re-elected and Mr .H. Steelo was added to-the numbef. The annual report was read and after moving the adoption of this Mr Spence welcomed Mrs T. H. Lowry who was , payi.ng her first visit to the Napier subs "centre since. her election as Dominion Red Gross president, and he. heartily congratulatfed her on thie hon'our.
Mrs Thompson on behalf of the V.A.D.'s presented Mrs Lowry with a bouquet of red carnations,, white freesias and red dahlias backed with green feaves and tied with gold ribbbn. Mr Spence 's next duty was to ex- , press to Miss King. on behalf' of the two Napier teams, winner and runners-up i'n th'e Collins Cup, their deepest appreciation and thanks for her inspiration and great help which they felt resulted ip the splendid win. Gaptain A. Railey and Captain K. Carrol, of the two teams, presented to Miss King a bpuquet 'of white chrysanthemunjs and red jahlias finished with narrow red ribbon and also a handsome white linen cloth with the names of the personnel of the vvinning teatos embroidered on it; Miss King briefly replied . thauking them and paid a tribute to- all girls in the classes. Mr H. Steele seeonded the chairman V splendid report and eaid th'at the- society were, ver y i ortunate ih having such an able chairman -and good committee. Several itenis were given during tlie eveping. The pupils of the Napier Collegiatb School gave choral speaking items, . "Cpngo" and ' ' Whistlewhistie"; Miss Millef played "Impromptu" (Schubert) and responded tq. an epcore; Miss% Sybil Robinson sang "The Soldier ' ' (Rupert Brooke'e poem) and" "Tho Star."" Mr T. H." Ringiancl, wliose items are always "popuiar, gave "The ListeneVs" And A. V. Morton's exquisite deseription of Seottish scenery at Beesidp. • •" Mrs T. H. Lowry said it gave her, great pleajaure as. New . Zealand pfqsident of the Red Gross and as a Napior womun to be present at the meeting. She >told her listeners about her recent trip to England and her Visits to various plaees of Red Cross interest. . She. next spoke of the accomplishment after 20 years' work of the amab gatiaiation of Red Cross and St. John '& Ambulance Assdciation which now work side by side. She concluded with reading a letter from Mrs Geddes, late of PuRetapu, recording her impressions of a conference when she deputised f or the speaker and finally stressed the work. which can be done by the juuior members. Mr M. S. Spence moved a hearty vote of thanks. , Mr Norman Grant, Wbllington, briefly cbngratulated the people in Hawke's Bay for their wonderful spirit of Red .Grose. He congratulated the teams which Won the Collins Cup and wished thenjt luck at. Palmerston North this year. He advoeated ' the penny a day as being the ideal way of helping Red Cjoss funds and- concluded with congratulations- to Napier on sending four of the eleven New Zealand cases of garme'nts in reply to .the Spanish appeal. . He wiehed Hawke's 'Bay the liighest success in Red Cross work. Miss King spoke on junior work no>v being prepared and said that the .iunior Red Crpss circle was tjie greatest inter-. xiational youth movement of the world. "V.A.D.'s eerved a'choiee supper and another splendid anifual meeting is added to Napier 'a record. 'Among those present- were: Mr and Mrs Harold Large, Mr and Mrs A. E. Bedford, Mr and Mrs T.
