WELLINGTON, This Day. The physical culture conference opened to-day, being attended by the Act-ing-Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser, and the Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, associated with whom wero the director of education, Mr. Lambourne, the Director-General of Health, Dr. Watt, and the Chief Inspeotor of primary schools, Dr. Mcllraith. The aim' is to consider the best means of raising the standard of physical fitness ip the eommunity and, in addition, a report is to be considered. A number of remits have been sent in by delegates. Mr. Fraser described the" conference as a very important one and thanked those present for accepting the invitation to attend. The view taken by the Government, he said, was that children should have the best and the fullest kind of physical education and develop* ujent, but there should be avenues provided for them to enuble them to care for their bodies. The work of the conference would be to consider what was desirable and practicable and how tha system could be improved, not only in schools, but right through. the liyes of fche people. Leisure was like most other things in life; it could be an immensely beneficial thing if properly utilised and qould be a tragically di3astrous thing if not properly utilised. He suggested that the conference should survey the whole situation and give the Government the benefit of their knowledge and wide experience.
