Committee Formed To Hand'e King Georgi Memorial Fund

TAUPO, This Day. A well-attended and very enthusiastic meeting was held in Taupo on Saturday night in connection with the King George V. Memorial Fund. Dr. J. Scaife Armstrong, ehairman of tlie Taupo Road Board, was in the chair, and the 6peakers were-Sir Ilarry Lauder, Mr A, F. Moncur, M.P., tho Rev. J. G. Laughton, Supt. of Maori Missions for the Presbyterian Church. Sir Harry Lauder outlined in a pleasing speech tbe aims and objects of the fund,' and stressed the necessity for increased efforts on behalf of child welfare in'New Zealand. He also saug several oi his best-known songs in characteristic style. On behalf of the Governtnent and those present, Mr A. F. Moncur proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Sir Harry, and this was seconded by the Rev. Mr Laughton, and carried with applause. Sir Harry was enthusiastically farewelled, and all present joined in singing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow." Over £18 was collected at the meeting, and it was decided to form a local committee to liandle the fund and collect other generous donations promis•ed throughout the distriol. The committee is as follows : — Dr. J. Scaife Armstrong (ehairman), Revs. J. G. Laughton and Te H. Kaa, Messrs G. G. Potts, C. G. Christenson, H. Keen,. F. Fletcher and A. Broad. Sir Harry Departs. Sir Harry Lauder and Miss Greta Lauder ,leit Taupo yesterday after a stay of almost three weeks, during which time Sir Harry and Mr R. H. Nimiuo did a lot of fly-nshing in the Waikato river. They were angiing for 13 days, and landed a total of 115 trout. The largest was T^lbs. and the 1 average 4Jlbs. Sir Harry' expressed the opinion that the fishing was very satisfactory, and. also that the local bot mineral baths had greatly improved his health during his stay and he was feeling a young man. He regretted very much having to leave Taupo. Inquest on Boy's Death. The adjourned inquest into the death of Robert William Shuker, aged five years, who was killed in Taupo when on his way to school pn Wednesday morning, was held on Saturday. The verdict of the Coroner, Rev. J. G. Laughton, was that the boy died from stock and internal haemorrhage as the result of injuries received ihrough being struck by a car driven by Laurence Jam.es Cquper. The evidence showed 'tliat the car was travelling at a moderate spced, and that Couper did his best to avoid an accident. The coroner added a rider to the etfect that school teachers should give the children under their care very frequent instruction as to their welfare on the highways and particularly with reference to playing on th« roads Golf Matohes. The Taupo Golf Club held competitions for women and men over the week-end when medal matches over 18 holes were decided in perfect weather. The men's event drew a large number of entries and resulted in a win for Mr K. Rameka with a nett 69. The five next best cards were: — J. Beggs, 86, 16, 70; W. Quarrie, 82, 12, 70; A. C. Garlick, 80, 9, 71; G. Marlow, 93, 22, 71 ; A. Ross, 90, 15, 75. A similar event for women was won by MrS Marlow, with a nett 71, Mrs Moon being runner-up witb 77. Rugby Prospects. The Taupo Rugby Sub-Union's 1937 season opens on Saturday next with a seven-a-side tournament. Eight teams are entered as follows: — Tokaanu A and B, Mokai A and B, Te Haroto A and B, Oruanui and Taupo, and good competition should result. The prospects for the season are exceptionally brigbt, and it is expected that there will be at least six teams in the competition every Saturday.
