ARRANGING A FLORAL BASKET SHOWN AT GUILD

How to arrange a basket of flowers Whs very ably demonstrated by Mrs E. Appleby at the meeting of members of the garden circle of the Hastings Townswomen's Guild, which was held in the W.D.F.U, room yesterday. .Mrs J. B. Pickering, the circle leader, was in the chair, and the secretary, Miss Shaw was also present. Mrs Pickering Welcomed all new members telling them that the success of the circle depended on each individual memberg contribution, even the smallest hint always being a help to someone else. Miss Shaw gave a most interesting talk- about the work to be done in the garden during the month and this was followed with great interest. Afternoon tea was enjoyed and tlien Mrs Pickering introduced Mrs Appleby who had brought with her a most glorious basket carried out in flame sbades with deep and lighter shaded dahlias and zinnias, pom pom dahlias, bonfire salvia., red berries, scarlet leaves and asparagus fern beautifully arranged." Mrs Appleby deccrated a second basket before the members with forsythia, african marigolds, yellow zinias, cannas, gaillardias and berries and while doing so gave several valuable hints. "The main point to remember wheri decorating is the Iblending of the colours," said Mrs. Appleby. Deeper , colours should be arranged at the bottom and lighter ones on top to prevent a top lieavy look. The same applies to the size as the larger blooms should b© at the bottom. "The freslmess of the flowers also counts quite a lot and a fresh lookinb piece of work always looks best. The best blooms Bhould be placed in the front because first impressions count a lot." • Miss Shaw proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs Appleby for her artistic demonstration and for the numerous hints she had given. while working. The competition for the day was f°r the beBjt arranged jam-jar of .flowers and this was judged by Mrs Appleby and resulted: Mrs Innes Campbell 1, Mrs Kirkpatrick 2, Mrs R. Campbell 3. Mrs Pickering reminded the members that the Horticultural Society had allowed the build space for a display and she asked everyone to help to make it attractive and worthy of the Guild. She also said that meetings would continue to be held in the "W.D.F.TJ.. room and nest month Mrs C. Clark will demonstrat© the making of a sheaf.
