GARDEN FETE BY ALL SAINTS' CHURCH

Despite inclement weather there was a very satisfactory attendance at tne garden fete held in eonnection with AU Saints' Parish Church, Taradale, on Saturday. Owing to the rain the cojitents of the stalls were removed hurriedly from the grounds to the schoolroom, where excellent businoss was done by the stallholders. Various competitions served to interest those present and added to the funds. Mrs T. H. Lowry, Okawa, who opened the proceedings, gave a short address, in the eouree of wnich she touched upon various aspects of church interest3, speaking strongly against the indifference of so many people with regard to Christian fellowship, and to the present day paucity of church attendance. Comparing. pioneering day difficulties — when people .had even to Avail themselves of bu]lock waggons to travellong distances to attend worship — with the modern means of fast transport, ' slie deplored that people of to-day could not make time to give attention to their religious afi'airs. The whole of the goods on the stalls were given by the members and other friends, and during the afternoon the vicar, the Rev. Canon Alfred Hodge, thanked everybody, including a number of Napier business people who had contributed, including Messrs J. N. Anderson and Sons, Bestall's Ltd., Blythes Ltd., Williams and Kettle Ltd., H. M. Bennett, Harston and Co., L. H. Deighton, Chisholm and Co., Eames and Co., Dockery and Co., N. Fairey, Bryant and Co. and the Office Supply Co; In- the -evening a successful dance was held in the schoolroom, for which ex cellent inusic was provided, gave a jolly wind-up to a notable day. Winners of competitions held during the day were atf follow: — Doll, Mr V/. Ellis; turkey, Mrs E, Robinson; cake," Mrs Boston.
