PUKEHOU SCHOOL

Education Board Proposals Brief reference of .the intentions of the Hawko's Bay Education Board with regard to the schools at Pukehou, Te Hauke and Opapa, appeared in yesterday's Herald-Tribune. In bringing the matter 'forward at yesterday's "ineeting of the - board;' the chairman} Mr G. A. Maddison, etated that with the department' s decision to erect a native school at, Te Hauke, entailing the „closing, of the Opapa school, the question of school accommodation at Pukehou had to be considered. "For several years past school has been held in a church building which Miss L'ydia . Williams kindly made available," Mr. Maddison said. "It is the only building in the district which cpuld possibly be used f br school purposes, a,nd although' the use of • the building ia „fully appreciated by the board it does not, as will be readily understood, by any means conform to the ' usual standard of a school building. The building being privately owned, the board is unable to expend any money upon it for improvements. The area of the site is one acre only, which aifords little scope for usual school activities. "It'has been proposed that when the Opapa School is closed, any pakeha children • attending there shall attend the Pukehou School. There is also a proposal to establish a conveyance service to take children from Pukekura to Pukehou School. The probably roll number of the Pukehou School will then be : Pukehou, present roll.nuraber 51, plus Pukehou children from Opapa' 7, plus children from Pukekura (say) 15; apn proximate total 73. "A school building of two classrooms would be needed to accommodate this number, knd I recommend to the board that. inquiries be made regarding the possibility of securing a suitable site at Pukehou large enough to accommodate the school and a teacher's residence, and that application be made to the department for a grant to cover the whole cost." The board decided to make inquiries as to the possibilities of securing a suitable site at Pukehou, and apply for a grant to the Education Department to cover the cost of the' work.
