BENTONITE DEPOSIT

Inquiry as to Electric Energy Required
(From
WAIPUKURAU, This Day. Arising out of the discovery of the bentonite deposit at Porangahau, the Gentral Hawke's Bay Power Board wrote to the Under-Secretary for Mines at Wellington as follows: — • - • "My board is at its next meeting considering an application for the. exteneion of its line beyond Porangahau. There are alternate routes that may be chosen. "Recently, as no doubt you are aware, bentonite was discovered in large quantities in the Porangahau district. If it is proposed to develop the bentonite, it appears most probable that electrical energy will be required for such an industry. My board would be glad to know whether there is tangible decision as regards development likely to be made in the near future^ and also it would 'esteem a rough estimate of energy requirements. "The bentonite is in a sparselypopulated area, and it is unlikely that our lines would xeach that part of the district in the ordinary course of events. Any information that you are able to give xegarding possible requirements would be appreciated.,, In his reply, the Under-Secretary said that he was unable to give the required information at the present time.
