MARY ASTOR ELOPES WITH HANDSOME MEXICAN
"I married him because I love him," said Mary Astor, when, after an hour spent denying reports of her third 4redding, she admitted eloping by aeroplane with Manuel del Cainpo, a handsome young Mexican. The eouple were married at Yuma, Arjzona, the "Gretna Qreen" of the United States. The manager of the Yuma Airport reported that on arrival the couple urged him to find a Judge. He called Judge Henry Kelly from his bed, and bride and groom\were ushered into his small sitting-room, Miss Astor wearing dark glasse'S, Judge Kelly deelared he did not khow who she was. " I didh't know they wero eoming heje, ' ' he explalned. The bride, who has been married twiee previously, gave her name as. Lucille Langhanke Thorpe, aged 30. The bridegroom said he was 25. Immediately after the ceremony the couple left for ' the border town of Mexicali, where del Campo entored a 'plane for Mexico City. Kissing her husband farewell, Miss Astor xeturned to Hollywood. Yuma was also the scene of Miss Astor >s Tunaway marriage to Dr. Thorpe, which was dissolved in April iast year. ^Thorpe expressed great surprise at the wedding, saying: "I'm a bit overwhelmed, though I had met del Campo when visiting Mary's home to see our daughter Maryln. I had heard they jnight marry, but.paid no attention to the rumour."
He could say nothing of what would happen to the Uttle daughter, foi whose custody he and Miss Asfor waged a legal battle which eaused: a worldwide sensation with the revelations of fche famous Astor diary in which the star recorded the most intimate details of her love affairs. j
