Merchant shipping under construction in Britain and Ireland at the end of March for the flrst time sipce Sepj tember, 1930, exceeded 1,000,000 tons. \ ,-Lloyds statistics show that on March i j3l there was an increase of 50,812 tons • jin work in hand compared with the •J jflgures for the previous quart8r. j The prespnt total toonage under conj atruction of 1,014,454 tons exceeds by • taore than 20 per cent. the tonnage : 'being built at the end of March, 1936. ■ ;It exceeds considerably the aggregate \ 'tonnage now under construction in the ! fonr leading countries abroad. The i total tonnage under construction in the World amounts to 2,452,051 tons. 1
