Points from Council Order Paper ITEMS 0F INTEREST The Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison, presided at the monthly meeting of the Hastings Borough Council last evening, others present being Crs. P. M. Cohr, T. S. Dobson, P. E. Loach, C."H.' Slater, T. Falconer, G. "W. B. McCormick, S. Ashcroft and A. L Bainbow. Leave of absenrie was granted Cr. S. J. McKee. » • * ~ The Building and Health Inspector, Mr O. Carrell, issued 30 miscellaneous licences last month, collecting £34 8/in fees. He paid inspections to 25 food premi'ses, five billiard rooms, and six calls to the saleyards. # * # A's the result of two half-days speut by the Health Inspector, Mr G. Carrell, inspeeting xubbish bins, 68 notices were served to provide bins with lids and 84 to provide new bins. # • # To date 3344 driver's licences have been isSued by the Borough Traffic Department, there being an additional 35 last month. The total fees from driver's and heavy traffic licences to date amount to £3683 11/10. * # * Last month 20 applicants for driver's licences were tested and only 16 passed. • * • "It is pleasing to note that the majority of the public are making use of these provisions for their safety" comm.ented the Borough Traffic Inspector, Mr D. Mann, when reporting that at the present time all the pedestrian crossings are being renewed. # # • The outeome of inspeeting 480 residences last month for leaky taps, dirty backyards, noxious weeds and unregistered dogs was that the Banger and Assistant Nuisance and Traffic Inspector, Mr H. A. Green, sent out 177 notices, mainly dog registrations (103), rub.bish on roadstead (26) and noxious weeds (20). • * • There are now 569 dogs registered in Hastings, the fees amounting fo £212 2/-. Last month's quota was 113 dogs, and £46 6/- in fees. • # • Five head of stock and 19 dogs were impounded last month by the Borough Banger. • • • Accounts amoynting to £37,237 2/4 were passed for payment. • * • The statement of outstanding rates showed a total of £2413 4/10, at the end of March last compared with £3048 8/1 a year ago. The collections for the current year amounted to 96.28 per cent. • * • Beferring to a recent caise near Eketahuna where damages were awarded against the county in connection with a motor car accident which occurred while the bitumen Toad was "being laid, an insurance company advised the council that it was prepared to quote a premium for Public Bisk insurance. The council, however, considered that there was no need for such cover in Hastings and merely "received" the letter. • • • An application for an annual grant to the Hawke's Bay Art Society for the maintenance and development of the Art Gallery and Museum, was deferred for consideration with this year 's estimates. • • • Wood boxing is to he placed round the pillars in the Municipal Theatre gallery to afford protection against tho plaster heing chipped off by per- i sons in the audience. * * • Owing to increased wages, occasioned by having to .work overtime at double rates of pay, the charge for Sunday night concerts in the Hastings Municipal Theatre has been increased from £3 to £5. # ♦ * The number of adult subscribers to the public library increased to 1498 last month . and the children 's section to 521. New hooks purchased totalled 83 and £59 17/- was banked. The attendance in the children 's library hus been adversely affected by the outbreak of infantile paralySis in the district.
