STATE THEATRE

RETUBN or "TOI! HAT" Blending romance with gay comedy, "Top Hat" tells a light, thoroughly intriguing and at all times plausible story, with never a lag or a dull moment. It is screening at a return season at the State Theatre now. When it comes to romancing3 there's nothing conventional about Pred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in "Top Hat. 1 ' Cn fact, there's nothing conventional about the entire picture, whieh features the first complete screen muBical score ever written by Irving Berlin. From the opening scene to the final fadeout it's a ssries of romantic, melodic, and hilarious surprises, Astaire dances two veraions of "No Strings," a novelty tap dance; he does & solo specialty, "Top Hat/' with a chorus of swagger young men; he sings "Cheek to Cheek,, and dances it with Ginger Rogers; he sings "Isn't This a Lovely Day?" and dances it with Miss Bogers; and the two dance the big number, the "Piccolino" with a chorus of sixty. Splendid support is accorded by a .comedy cast which has seldom been matched on stage or screen. It lncludes Helen Broderiek, forilliant comedienne from the stage, Edward Everett Horton, Erik Rhodes, and Eric Blore. Saturday'g Attraction. '"The White Hunter" is coming to the State on Saturday, with Warnor Baxter, June Lang, Alison Skipworth and Wilfred Lawson in the leading roles. It is a strange story of love during a trek through wild jungle.
