AIJCELAND, Last Night. I Renewed endeavours to secure mere' favourable tariff treatment of non;British oranges and grapefruit imported fo New Zealand were niade by the Auek•land Retail Fruiterers' Assoeiation this ,week. Although the Government's decision to reduce the duty on foreign maize was cited as a principle, no suc, cess attended their efforts. The secreitary of the assoeiation, Air S. Coleman, said the duty amounted to 9s per case and it was thought the Government, having made concessions in tariffs: governing the importation of pig and' poultry foods, would see its way clear 'to grant the Salne facilities in regard fo grapefruit and oranges, which were badly needed in New Zealand. Mr Coleman said a telegram was despatched to Hon. M. Fagan, ActingMinister of Customs, requesting Cabiner to authorise a temporary concession in the duty. It was pointed out that tixc high prices ruling for these fruits were causing hardship and diseontent, and in view of the shipment of Californian oranges, whieh is due in Auckland on Friday, immediate action was sought. A reply was received from Mr Fagan sta'ting that careful consideration had been given to the representations, but it was regrettod that no concessions couid be granted in respect of the" duty . on Californian oranges and grapefruit.
