Waipawa Decides On Celebrations AFTERNOON FUNCTION

WAIPAWA, Tkis Day. There was a large and representative attendance at tke public meeting keld in the Waipawa Borougk Council Chambers last evening to eonsider proposals for a suitable programme of celebrations on Coronation Day, tke Mayor, Mr C.'G. E. Harker, being in the chair. An apology was tendered on behalf of Mr D. H. Edwards. A circular letter from the Primo Minister with a suggested programme was read, urging that if possible thg cfficial reading oi the proclamation be made at 11 a.m. to accord wikn the main ceremony at Wellington. Tke Mayor stated tkat tkese were suggestions only, and each town was at liberty to arrange a programme most suitable to their community. It was not always convenient in tke country to" fall in witk city arrangements, and the function could be held either iu the morning or tke afternoon. Mr Harker also intimated that he had been advised by. the Power Board that f ree lighting for illumination purposes or for any official function would be * available during Coronation Week, Afternoon Proposed, Mr Harker said that the council had had a preliminary discussion as to the form*of the' celebrations, when it "had been decided to call a public meeting. He thoiiglit that in view of 'the "Wai-1 pukurau function ' being held ' in the morning. and fihishing' at noon, Waipawa should hold theirs in the afternoon. The school function would be- held at 9 o 'clock -in the morning. It had been suggested that the official celebrations be held in the. afternoon commencing with a decorated procession from the Clock'. Tower to Coronation Park, where the, pro-clamatiqn would be read, and a sports meeting* to follow; consisting of horse . eyents, general t athletic : events . and children 's sports, and probably chopping items. The picturee proprietor had arranged a special programme for the evening, but a ball could be held an some other night iu the week" if the meeting .was in.favour of this. After outliniug these tentative proposals Mr Harker opened the matter for discussion. On the motion of Mr* Hunt it w;as decided that all- present be a. committee to deal with the matter. A further motion by Mr Critchley that the school function be left in the hands of the School Committee to arrange was also adopted. Miss Pellow said it would be necessary to make the function an .afternoon one if it Were proposed to have decorated vehicles, to allow the time necessary for preparation. Mr A. E. Jull said he thought it would be advisable to concentrate on the * afternoon, and he was sure that any programme arranged would be attended by success and that the citizens of the town would give every assistance. It would .be advisable To eonsider some proposal for an alternative scheme in the event of wet weather. Mr F. Holt considered tliat the prqclamation should be read in the town either at the Post Office or the Munieipal Buildings. ' ■ ■ Committees Set Up. It was decided to adopt the proposals outlined by the Mayor and the following committees were set up to further the matter: — Procession, Messrs S. W. Strang, F, M. Tickner, Trevor JBlack, Mrs Hunt and Miss Jullj general sports, Messrs T. B. Jackson, R. -.C. Adlam, F. Eagle, N. Wiseman, * N. Verran, F. Adeane, J. Vaughan and F. Kingston; horse events, Messrs T. Black, H, Mackenzie, H. Rathbone and J . French. . . . * The Town Clerk was appointed . as convenor for all committees until their iirst meeting. In reply to a question, the Mayor said he understood that trophies for the horse events would be arranged by the competitors, while the council would make a grant towards the children't events. Mr Jull advocated that a public subscnption list be opened and the suggestion was adopted. It .was stated that the committee of the bachelors and spinstel's .of Waipawa had arranged a ball for the, night -before Coronation Day, and it was decided that the general committee should cooper'ate in this connection, a request to be made to the .ommittee that, a. percentage of any profits be allccated to the Kung George V Memorial FundV Mr Critchley inqiiired as to tlie proposals for lighting and decorating tlie town, ' and suggested that aiiy sclveme be arranged' in conjunction with the business people, it was decided that Mqssrs : H. .Limbrick, .W.
