TENTATIVE ARRANGEMENTS FOR WAIROA
(From
WAIROA, Last Night. At a recent meeting held in the Borough Councjl Chambers, to consider the best way of carrying out future carnivals, a shift over to a far more important matter occurred. The Mayor, Mr H. L. Harker, who was in the cbair, made the' suggestion that the same committee (the one to run the carnival) should also undertake the arrangemeiit of the Coronation celebrations in Wairoa. This the committee readily took up and started at once to discuss arrangements which may at present be considered only tentative. The programme is subject to alteration as a result of a meeting to be held on Thursday. It has been already suggested that on the motning of May 12 a big parade should be held, in which the Municipal Band should take a part as well as the Returned Soldiers' Association, Fire Brigade, lodges, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, South African and Maori War Veterans, the schools and Cursing Association should be asked to take part. Whatever Toute may be selccted it is proposed that the finish should be at Coronation jSquare, when the proceeJings will be such as to niark fitly a momentous occasion. At this function ifc is hoped to be able to. get some prominent member of tlie Government to deliver the address. It was also suggested that a dinner should be given to tlie children, special catering to be arranged for country children wlio could not possibly be lei't stranded in town all day. Tlie afternoon programme is n'ot so far advanced, but the local.Rugby subunion is to be asked to put on a representative football match is possible. A fireworks display is also suggested for the evening. The Mayor stated that the Borough Council was prepared to assist in any way it could. The coloured lights would be turned on at the beginning of Coro-, nation Week as part of the general decoration scheme. - The business people are to be asked to do as much decoration of their premises as pcssible, and that "ftie residents generally would make as good a display of bunting as possible. Other suggestions will, no doubt, be brought forward, including possibly a giant bonfire on Ruarakaiputara Hill, the liighest point in view of the town.
