OBITUARY
MR JAMES ARTHUR HE1R A further link with the early days °f the Dominion was severed yesterday when the death occurred jn a private nursing-home in Hastings o'x Mr. James Arthur Heir, of Tomoana. The late Mr. Heir was born in Victoria in 1859. A few years later he came with his parents to Port Chalmers, where'he was later apprenticed to the engineering trade with the firm of Morgan and Cable. For some time he served on the steamers of the Union Steam Ship Co. as a marino engineer, and in 1884 he entered the employ of the Tomoana freezing works and for many years had been in charge of the engine-room. Some two- years ago, on aceount of failing health, Mr. Heir resigned from this position, after 50 years of service well and faithfully carried out, but the example he set will be an inspiration and fond memory to many oi those with whom he was associated. The late Mr. Heir, being of a qtiiet and retiring nature, did not take an active part in public life but, with his late wife, was closely associated with the work of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, in which he^ held office as an elder for many years.
