LORD NUFFIELD FUND

Committee Set Up For Hastings . MANY APPLICATIONS The setting up of a committee to administer th© balance of £600 in th Lord Nuffield trust fund, and the intention to invite applications for assistance troin tliis fund, were announced by thc Mayor of Hastings, Mr G. A, Madclison, this morning. It Avill be recalled that upon receipl of the gift of £1100 from Lord Nuffielc the Mayor had allocated certair amounts to various charitable organisations, but he had retained £600 tc assist cases of need that did not receive any help from institutions in this district. At the time he intimated that it was his intention to set up a special committee to administer this fund, and in fulfilment of that desire he has arranged for the following committee tc be fornied The Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs G. A. Maddison), Messrs W. S. Averill, C. Lassen, S. J. McKee, O. Griffitbs, A. E. O'Meara, and A. J. Manson and the Rev. R. B. Gosnell, The Mayor stated this morning that from the . correspondence he has received since Lord Nuffield made his gift is was clear that there vvere many worthy cases that were in urgent need of help and that could not receive assistance from other sources. Aithough the retention of part of th© gift for sueh cases meant considerable investigatory work, it was his desire that where possible these people should be assisted. "If the necessafy organisation can be set up, I am in hopes that it will be possjble to hold a health camp for orippled and other suffering children during the school holidays," said Mr Maddison. He pointed out that owing to the limited accommodation at the Otaki Health Capip only a limited number of our ohildren were able to take advantage of the wonderful service that was being rendered there. "I am hopeful that we will b© able to suppleinent that service by hplding a camp of our own and so offer greater opportunities for a greater number of oqr children," he said. Reverting again jbo "ti1© committee s©t up, Mr Maddison said that this body had already held a meeting and had decided to invite applications for assistance from the fund, but he pointed i>ut that help would only b© granted to those who came within the perview of Lord Nuffield' s wish, as set out in his letteiwfchat ia, crippled children,, and those suffering from such afflictions as blindnes's, . deafness, dumbness and other physical disabilities. Mr Maddison said that he had reoeived many otlier. applications from indigent people, but aithough these persons wer© ua doubt worthy - of assistance, it was impossible t° grant them help from the Lord Nuffield Fund. Among th© applications for assistance already received, said Mr Maddison, were a number of requests for artificial limbs. This matter was fully disoussed hy the committee in the presenoe of Mr C- Lassen, chairman of the Hawkei's Bay Hospital Board, and Mr B. J. McKee, another member of the Hospital Board, and the committee wag given to understand that persons requiring limbs would be satisfactorily dealt wjtb by tbe Hospital Board.
