Much Business Discussed at Council Meeting

WAIPAWA, Last Night. The monthly meeting of the Waipawa Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor, Mr Cv G. E. Harker, and Crs. F. Eagle, W. M. Murray, F. R. Furminger, J. Barker, F. MacGregor, and H. T. Limbrick. Before commencing ordinary business, the Mayor xeferred to the death of Mr E. H. Lee, a former borough solicitor, and a vote of sympathy was passed with the relatives. The Waipawa R.S.A. made application for pern^ssion to hold the Anzae Day serviee in the Memorial grounds. — dranted. The Waipawa Hospital Board xequested payment of first quarter's levy before preparation of 1937/38 estimates. —Payment authorised. The Prime Minieter, Rt. Hon. M. J. Sayage, wrote seeking the assistance qf the .council in opening a . f und " for ' a memorial to late King George V.— The Mayor .intimated. that the necessary steps had already been taken to. open a fund in Waipawa. He thought the proposed memorial would meet with the approval of all. , , . .... W. Cooper wrote applying for perxnission to .carry out small alterations at the back of his. premises in Carson'e buildings. — Matter referred tO building eommittee with powier to act. The Plunket Society sought the approval of the council for a garage to be erected on the site of the Plunket rooms. — -The Mayor said that tho property was in No. 2 area, and tho council had full powers to use their discretion. The necessary permission was granted on the motion of the Mayor. The Highways Board wrote with roference to the sealing of the xemainder of Bibby street, and suggesting that further metalling be done before apecifications could be passed. — The overseor said he had advised a coating of chips, which the board was now objecting to. From the board 's recommendatibns h8 thought it would be necessary to cdat the xoad with red metal. This. -would take some time to cOnsolidate, so that it would not now be possible to tarseal tho road before the winter. Mr Eagle said it was unfortunate that the work could not be completed. He suggested that the estimate of cost be sent to the board now, and tho metal be spread in August, so that it could be tarred as soon as ready. C. H. Edwards applied for gas connection to a new house in McGreevy street.— -Granted. The Mayor reported that the truck purchased by the council had arrived and was giving satisfaction. The Mayor said it would be necessary for the council to appoint a building inspector. The Health Inspector had been acting in an honorary capacity, and he was willing to continue giving the council the benefit of his advice. II was necessary, however, to formally appoint a member of the council 's staff to the position. — Appointment of the borough overseer, Mr B. Petherick,' was approved. Mr C. N. Whyman was appointed as dog tax collector and ranger on the motion of Mr Furminger.
