Shortage Depied By Union INDUCEMENT NEEDED
(By Telegraph
WELLINGTON, Last Night. In unanimous resolution® adopted at a meeting of the New Zealand Railway Tradesmen's Association and the Skilled Trades' Union yesterday, the opinion was expressed that the allegcd shortage of tradesmen was not as acute as the public was being advised and it was stated that the meeting would do its utmost to preserve the rightg of tradesmen to retain the sole rights of performing all work recognised as part of their trades. The opinion of the meeting was that the full requirements could be met satisfactorily if the employers co-operated with the unions in fulfilling the programme of work. It was considered that if suffieient inducement were offered respecting rates of pay "and continuity of employment many ti adesmen who were forced through unfavourahle circumstances into other avenues of employment, would unhesitatingly rsturn to their trades. The meeting further resolved that after every possible effort had been made to obtain the required number of tradesmen and suffieient inducement had been given all artisans again to take up work at their trades and it was then found that the requirements had not beeia met, the tradesmen would be prepared to consider the training of suitable young men who had had some training at teehnical schools under the apprenticeship system approved by the trades unions.
