THE VEGETABLE GARDEN

The most important sowing in the vegetable garden for the month is onion seed. All garden plots should grow their own plants, loz. of seed will raise 1000 plants. _ j Greens and salads should constitute a considerable portion of our food. The umjority of them are easily grown and are adaptable to a wide range of soils and climates. Mustard and cress may now be sown in beds. Sow cress four days before mustard so that the two may be ready for cutting together. The following root crops ean now be sown — Beet, turnip rooted and long red carrot, early horn and long Ted. onions, straw Spanish and early globe; turnippj white ®.nd golden ball; parsnip, hollowcrown and garden swedes. B.eds should be prepared for setting garlic, shallots and potato onions. The ground should be deeply worked and potash added to the soil. Broad beans may be set in drijls at once. Early planting is the only successful way of cultivating this crop owing to the bumble bee and rust durjng the laste spring. Seeds or plants of cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, savoys, silver beet and spinaeh winter, should be in everybody's garden. Backward crops may be forced along by using uitrate of soda, loz. per gallon. Deep digging and sowing of green inanure is an important operation that should take place now. Chemiaal manures are good, , stable manure ^ is better, and green manure, providing hUmus, is an asset to every garden, Mustard, lupins? oats and rye are the princip,al varieties used. The herb gardens have now finished flowering and the heads should be cut off and the plants carefuly trimmed. Parsley seed may be sown in drills and plants of thyme and sage can be care. fully layered for new stock.
