Official Opening of Season
(From
NORSEWOOD, Last Night. The Norsewood Golf Glub, during the week-end, held its official opening for the season and although the weather in the morning was doubtful and cold, it cleared considerably by the afternoon and was ideal. The programme for the morning was a competition for local players over nine holes. It was keenly contested and very enjoyable and resnlted in Mrs L. Schwabe and Mr A. Bennett being the winners. In the afternoon, Mr H. Stratford, president, in a speech in which he wished the club a very successful season, declared the links open, and then called on Mrs Singh — the ladies' club captain — to hit the first ball, which was done amidst applause. The captain, Mr P. Bennett, had a busy time eixtending welcomes and aftending to the large number of visitors, including. players from Takapau, Ormondville, Dannevirke and Makotuku. A Canadian foursome was played and won by Mrs Adamson and Mr C. Barclay, of Norsewood, who put up a very creditable performanee. As the players arrived at the club house from their game, a very appetising afternoon tea was served, and was thoroughly appreciated. Considerablc interest was taken in the games until late in the afternoon, when the failing daylight brought to a close a most enjoyable and successful opening. The elub hope to have the links greatly improved as the season advances. Last night the club held a most successful and enjoyable dance in the Town Hall, when visitors from far and near wero present in large numbers. Much time had been expended on the decorations which consisted of streamers of orange, red, green and blue, artistically caught from the centre of the ceiling and taken to the falls. Attention had also been given to the stage, which- looked very pleasing with an abundance of beautiful flowers nicely arranged. Mr K. Staiger, assisted by Mr Y. Hulena, cayried out the duties of M.O. Mr W. Te Tau's orchestra was in great form, and their playing contributea to the pleasure of patrons. A very acceptable ext^a was played by Mr Staiger (piano) and Miss Coady (violin). A spot waltz created considerable interest and was won by Miss I. Barclay and Mr A. Mitchell. A twilight streamer and confetti waltz was a popular number, and caused much merriment. A competition for a ham was finalised and won by Mr W. Haycock. Complimentaty comments were passed on the splendid supper served, and the work in this conneetion was carried out by many willing helpers. Tbe secretary, Mrs. L. Schwabe, and her energetic committee and helpers had certainly worked hard and their efforte were rewarded by a very succesfui dance. *
