Nationaliste objected to, the singing* of the British national anthem and the presence. of an Admiral at the opening of Parliament and the flying of the Union Jack on Parliament buildings; also the danger of the coun-» try's freedom being circumscrxbed, by the Premier 's commitments at the Im.-* perial Conference. General Hertzog, replying, refused to apologise for the presence of an Admiral of the British Fleet, which, he said, had saved South Africa millions In protecting trade. Regarding the anthem, he said they must respect the feelings of the Eng-lish-speaking section. A Nafionalist interjected: "How, long?" and General Hertzog replied; "So long as it is necessary to maintain friendly relations." He reserued the right to do what hei could for Ireland if anything concerning that country was discussed at the conference. Referring to South-west Africa, he justified the proclamation suppressing subversive movements by doeuments which were confiscated a year ago showing indisputably efforts to intimidate Germans who became Union citizens. .. —
