The Pakowhai Women's Institute held its April meeting in the' Church Hall on Thursday, Mrs Whittington presiding over a good attendance. Several visitors, also new members, were

weicomed. The Gardening Circle members were congratulated on the fine display of (lowers at the March meeting. For the District Federation annual Council meeting to be lxeld in Napier this month, Mesdames Brooker and Gabrielsen were appointed delegates. Mrs Chaplnan-Taylor gave an enlightening and instructive talk on Social Purit.y. At the conclusion she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs Chapman-Taylor congratulated the Institute on the new programme for the year. Mrs Stanford was thanked for supplying milk for afternoon tea for the past year. The best bloorti competition was won by Mrs T. M. Crawford (Connn) (who holds tlie brass vase for ihe month). Mrs Houston (Petunia) and Mrs Brunton (Rudbeekia) were second and Mrs Ueuch (winter Ixia) third. Tliree plain scones: Mrs John Bartle 1, Mrs H.

liussel 2, JMesdames Robinson and Mitchell 3. A good collection of articles was brought along by members for the Hawke's Bay Chdldren's Home. An enjoyable "Golden Thread" talk on New Zealand was given by Mrs Brunton. Mrs J. Parker gave an interesting demonstration on liow to make woolfilled quilts and brought along several specimens, one double bed size having boen in uso five years and still as good as new. i\Jl tho processes were explained in detoil and Mrs Parker was thanked for her helpful and practical liints. Aflornocn tea was served by tlie hostesses : Mesdames A . Bartle, J. Bartle, Brunton, Brown, Boshier and Brooker.
