With the express thundering along behind them in the distance the horses raced madly along the track and galloped on to the railway bridge where they became Stuck ^nong the eleepers. / The engine light had picked up the animals ahead in time for the expresss to be stopped near the bridge, whereupon the engine crew was confronted with a remarkable obstacle. Two passengers left the train and obtained guns from a plaee nearby, the horses being shot on the bridge where they had frantically struggled unsuccessfully to get ffee. The crew found it impossible to release them alive. After shooting the animals it was necessary to sever part of the bodies to release them. The delay caused the express to arrive here nearly two hours late.
