Imperial Airways' New Standard 42 PASSENGERS
' RUGBY, April 1. Ihe lexgeet land -'plane air liner in the world and the first of a new class for Imperial Airways, for whom 14 are on order at Armstrong-WMtworth. aireraft works near Southampton, -is no.w nearing completion and should be ready te fiy in two or three months time. Some of ihe new liners are intended for fhe Oontinental air routes, wMle others will operate Empire land plane services which are. io supplement the flying boat aerviees. The flrwt machine will be named Enrign, five of whieh are now in various stages of manufacture. They are impressivs atructures and fully loaded they will Weigh 20 tone or 1} tons more than the Empire flying boats. They JhaTe a wing spread of»127 f eet and are |114 feet in length. On the European jaervicei they will caixy 42 passengers land a crew of five, On the Empire pontes they will carry 27 passengers by iday or 20 in eleeping berths by night. |They are powered by four Siddeley*Eiger air-cooled engines of an aggrefgate of 8400 horse-power driving eonjtrollable pitch air screws, which will enable .them to take .off with heavy loads and give increased eruising speedw The fnel tanks are being bnilt into the Jwings and will maka it possible for the '^plane to fly 1000 miles non-stop against a 40-miles-an-hour head wind. The nnder carxiage is the largest of the retraetable klnd in th# world.
