THE DAVIS CUP

IHE EUROPEAN ZONE SOUTH AFRICA MAY 3MEET N.Z. DATES FOR CONCLUSION OF ROUNDS The 12 matches set down for decision in the first and seqond rounds of the Davis Cup European Zone will be as follow: — First Ronnd (1) Belgium. Hungary. (2) Switzerland. Ireland. C3) South Africa. Netherlands. (4) Ghina. New Zealand. Second Kouna (5) Italy. Monaco. • (6) • Germany. Austria. (7) Sweden. Greece. (8) Winner of 1. Winner of 2. (9) Winner 3. Winner 4. (10) Jugoslavia. Roumania. (11) Poland. Czechoslovakia. (12) France. Norway. In the third round the winner of 5 meets winner of 6; winner of 7 meets winner of 8; winher of 9 meets winner of 10; winner of 11 meets winner of 12. The first round of the competition must be completed by May 4, the second by May 16, the third by June 8. the European zone semi-finals June 17, and the finals of the two zones, European and American, by July 12. The inter-zOne fittal will be played oa July 17, 19 and 20, and the challenge round on the centrp courts at Wimbledon on JUly 24, 26 and 27. From the draw it wiil be seen that the European zone is somewhat lopsided, as Germany has a fairly easj task in the top half, where Italy can be regarded as the only strong threat, while the bottom hqlf is charged with strong teams like Jugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, France and South Africa. The South Africans will trqvel to Holland for their first match, which they should win, and the probability is that they will then have to play New Zealand in England. It will be one of the surprises of the tournament if they fail to get by the' New Zealanders (says the Rand Daily Mail). and if they do progress into

the third round they wltt most likeiy have to meet the Jugoslavs. In the American zone the United States meet Japan and Austraiia play Mexico. Here it is a question whether the United States or Austraiia will aualify to meet the winners of the European zone for the right to challenge Great Britain for the possession o£ the Davis Cup.
