AUCKLAND, Last Night. After ( good start against the M.C.C. Steam the Auckland- Wellington combin,ed side slumped badly in the match commenced to-day. The opening batsmen for the combined team, Whitelaw and Postles, gave the side a splendid start, compiling 76 runs for the flrst wickpt. The batsmen were favoured by an easy pitch in the early stages which made tho English fast bowlers comparatively ineffective. . However, the opening batsmen played safe and productive cricket and it was unfortunate that the advantage they gave their side was lost by the later batsmen. Sale played a confident innings xor 36, but the remaining Aucklandera made a very poor showing and the Bide'. was &U out for 183. A feature of the: innings was the . splendid dsplay ' by. Whitelaw who opened and carried his bat for 99. He faced the strong Eng-i lish attack with confidence and revealedj a wide range of shots, The last two: Auckland wickets fell before he could' complete his century. A brilliant exhibition of flighting and good length spin bowling was given by Verity who took four wickets for 64 runs. He waa tho most troublesome botrler on the day. England commenced their innings confidently, Wyatt and Worthington raising 56 for the loss of no wickets. Scores:— ' AUCKLAND. First Innings.
