Acted against a thrill-teeming background of the French Revolution, boosts a new star discovery in the leading feminine role. She is Hazel Terry, a grand-niece of the immortal Ellen Terry. The love triangle ia formed by the Marquis of Corbal, Cleonie, the girl, and Varennes, an unscrupulous xevolutionary. Varennes had rescued Cleonie from the guillotine but it was not long before she realised the' real reasons for his act of mercy. She escaped and is pursued by his soldiers and rescued by the Marquis of Corbal — -on to whose estate she had wandered. Corbal gives her shelter and a romance springs up. Varennes' next rnove is to get a decree passed whereby intermaTriage among aristocrats is forbidden. The two lovers defy it, and. the marriage is celebrated in the grim shadows of the guillotine
