EAST COAST HIGHWAY
Trap for Motorists SEVERAL CARS CAUGHT The wisdom of the Automobile Association in advising motorists against attempting to use the scenic highway between Opotiki and Gisborne, round Ihe coast, was demonstrated during the holidays, when, despite the eomparatively favourable conditions, ajt least six cars and a large truck were caught either in one of- the creeks or else on the beach. During the past few uays, the xoad has been successfully negotiated by a nuenber of cars without difficulty, but the making of the circuit without trouble requires a combination of luek and good management. Last week, the creeks and rivers were at the lowest level for many months, but even under these conditions the road presents several obstacles to a trouble-free journey, notably at two points on either side of Waihau Bay. Ou the Opotiki side, one of the smallest creeks on the whole road has become subject to tidal influences, the sea creating a shingle bar against which the water backs up to a considerable depth between tides, forcning an unexpectedly tricky erossing for the unwary motorist. On Friday last, five cars experieneed trouble in this creek and had to be towed out.
