EXPORT OF BACONERS

Control Not Intended

f" HAMILTON, March 28. The assurance given by the Prime Minister, the Bt. Hon. M. 3. Savage, that the Government had no intention of controlling the export' of baconers unless circumstances, such as depressed market conditions, made intervention necessary, has been received with gratification by Waikato producers. The president of the Waikato Buttermilk Producers' Association, Mr. R. Ghilcott, stated yesterday that the members of the association produced ' 40,000 baconers annually. They specialised in buying store pigs from farmers and in fattening them for the market. During the last season, he said, the market for baconers had been very satisfactory, and the producers generally were contented with the existing conditions. Competition was keen, and it was felt that if this competition wero removed by the imposition of control on exports, there would be a reduetion in jprices and a consequent loss to producers. The assurance that the present conditions would not be altered gave that stability and certainty to the industry which the producers desired, said Mr. Chilcott. The association did not anti* cipate that any circumstances wouid arise which would unduly depress the market in the immediate future.
