Labour Partv's Steps To Combat Influence AFFILIATION REFUSED

- WELLlS" GTON* Last Night. Steps taken to maintain 'the freedom of the Labour movement from Communistic influence were referred to iu the report of the Kational Executive • of the. Kew Zealand Labour Party, presented at the annual conference yesterday, "It having been reported . to the Kational Executive that Communjst Party speakers were endeavouring to addrcss meetings of branch memlfers, and that in afc leasfc one instance faey had succeeded in doing so, an instructfon was sent to all branches of the party (19/10/30) to. ihe effsct thal they. were not to reply to any communica-j tions from the Communist Party or its: auxiliaries, not " to ; allow any Commun- ! ist to address the members, nor to publish ia the newspaper Press any resolution dealing with matters of policy that had not previously been endorsed by annual conference, " the report sfated. "An application from the Communist Party for affiliation with the party was rficeived and dealt with by the Kational Executive on Kovember 12," 1936, when it was decided to refuse to endoise the application for the following reasons: — (1) The constitution does not provido for affiliation with any other politicaJ party;" (2) aanual conference has on numerous occasions expressed by r'esolu tion the desirability of preventing members of the Communist Party taking any . part whatsoever in the work of the Labour Party; (3) the fundamentai differences of political principle betweeu the Communist Party and the Labour Party, and particularJy with Tegard to the methods of achieving Socialism ; (i) their* past xecord of viliiication and obstruction of Labour, and the fact that Communist candidates opposed Labour candidates atthe Jast electiqa,"
noon party in the hall. The room was decorated with bright flowers, and a jolly fire added to the cosiness. The afternoon was very pleasantly spent in various games. Generai regret was expressed that owingj to ill-health Mrs Moran had felt impelled to relinquish the position of president, and it was lioped that at some future date she would agam be able to aceept that position. A delightful afternoon. tea concluded a very pleasant gathering.
