Easter Meeting of H.B. Association

TITLE TO WANGANUI The twenty-ninth annual meeting of the Hawke's Bay Rifl© Association took place during the Easter holidays. The weather conditions were far from pleasant on the first day and when firing commenced for the 600 yards match a thick drizzle set in and at timee it was almost impossible to pick up the spotters and marking discs on the targets. In consequence there were a number of disastrous crashes at this range. Visiting marksmen were present from Wellington, Wairarapa, Wanganui, Marton, Bulls, Dannevirke and. other centres. Hawke's Bay rifle clubs were weil represented and considering the adverse weather conditions the entries were the hest received for many years. The champion belt was won by Riflemen J. Paterson, of Wanganui with 146 out of a possible 150. The runnerup was his club-mate, J. E. Farley, with 143. The handicap aggregate was won by Eifleman A. S. Berry^ of Dannevirke, and the runner-up was Bruce Douglas, of the Craggy Range Club. ' Mention must- be mad© of some very meritorious performances during the meeting*. They were as follow- — H. Brehaut, of the Okawa club won the service match with 73. This brilliant young marksman also divided the first two prizes in the 300 yards match with K. Lumsden, of Bulls. Botb scored the possible of 50. Four competitors — F. H. James, J. E- Farley, J. Paterson and F. Soler- — divided the first four prizes in the 500 yard match. All scored the possible of 50. Competing in an extra match over 300, 500 and 600 yards — seven shots at each range — T. McNabb, H. Meads and W. J. Burton all scored 102 out of a possibl© of 105. The final extra match — 10 shots at 500 and 10 shots at 600 yards— was won by Staff-Sergeant Major Kearney of the Napier Club with 97 out of a possible 100. The champion teams match was won by the Okawa club team with the remarkably fine score of 399. The following are the individual scores of the various matches ; — Service match, 300 yards.
