MATCH ABANDONED
Hawke Cup Chalienge (By Talegraph— Presa Aasooiation.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. Owing to rain and a sodden wicket, no play was possible yesterday in the Hawke Cup matck between Manawatu and South Auckland, and the chpllenging team decided to abandon the game. When play was stopped by rain on Monday, Manawatu had 284 runs on the board for the loss of four wickets. Yesterday, after heavy overnight rain, the uinpires inspected the wicket at 10.15 a.m. and found it unfit for play, deciding to make another inspection at 2 p.m. There wag some hope that it wduld be possible to resunie .play duriiig the afternoon, but further rain during the lunch hour settled tlie matter. Under the Hawke Cup rules as recently amehded, in the event of no decision. on the first innings lxaving been reached in the scheduled three days for play an extra day js now provided. South Auckland, however, decided to abandon the match, as iive of tlieir team had to be baek at work to-day. Tbis is the thirteenth chalienge that Manawatu have sustained in a row, creating a record, the previous best figure being 12 by South Auckland.
