PIRATE TOURNAMENT
Win for Palmerston North Kia Toa Pirates, Palmerston North, won the first Rugby football tournament for Pirate football clubs of the North Island. The tournament was held at Napier over the Easter holidays, and competition was for the handsome Wallace Cook Shield and a sports shield presented by the Napier Pirates Club. In the final Kiatoa beat Napier by 16 points to three. Four teams entered — Wellington, Wanganui, Napier and Kiatoa Pirates. The visitors were welcomed at the Napier club's gymnasium by the president, Mr Leslie Dine, and during their stay in Napier were taken on sight-seeing tourus They were given a farewell cere mony laet evening, when the two shields were presented to the Kiatoa Club, which won the sports tournament as well as the football. This tournament, which was held for the first time this Easter at Napier, proved most successful, and its future popularity seems assured. Next year it is to be held at Wanganui, then at Palmerston North, and then at Wellington. The sports meeting inciuded place and drop-kicking, tugs-o'-war, and running events. Visitors and local footballers appreciated this event as a novelty. The results of the football matches were as follow-— First Round Napier beat Wellington. Kiatoa beat Wanganui. Final. Kiatoa (16) beat Napier (6). In the play-off between tbe two losing teams of the first round, Wanganui defeated Wellington.
